The Spanish Town Cast Iron Bridge, built in 1801, is made of cast iron…thus its name. It extends to the Rio Cobre River and is used for vehicular traffic, but pedestrians also make use of the bridge. It’s known for being the oldest bridge of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. And though still strong, plans are being made to have the bridge improved.

The Spanish Bridge does appear to be a very interesting and historically significant bridge - but the claim to be the oldest of its type in the western hemisphere is simply wrong.
The World Heritage Site at Ironbridge, near Telford in England is over twenty years older than the Spanish Bridge having been built in 1779. It is of cast iron; Abraham Darby III was one of the originating giants of the Industrial Revolution and this bridge was his creation. The position of the bridge is roughly 52.63 degrees north and 2.49 degrees west - therefore it is in the western hemisphere. Teh ironbridge in historic Shropshire spans the gorge of the river Severn and is well worth the visit.
It was Abraham Derby I who perfected the method of smelting iron using coke instead of charcoal which had been used previously, this was one of the key developments that gave rise to the industrial revolution in the world and without which there would never have been a Spanish Cast Iron Bridge!
